Milan slumped to a humiliating 5-1 defeat to bitter rivals Inter on Saturday evening, maintaining a dreadful run of form in the Derby della Madonnina. Stefano Pioli’s side lost four consecutive games against Inter across all competitions last season without scoring.
Despite breaking their scoring duck in this fixture, Milan conceded one goal more in this encounter than they had in their previous three combined. Rafael Leao did his part with a consolation goal, but Pioli’s side looked up the creek without a paddle, relinquishing a perfect three-game Serie A start almost without a fight.
Expectations were high in the Milan camp before the derby. New arrivals have enjoyed a stellar start to life in Serie A, boosting Rossoneri’s confidence ahead of this early top-table six-pointer. But Inter proved too strong for Pioli’s men, as the Italian manager admitted himself in the aftermath.
“Inter are strong, that is not surprising, but the result is too heavy considering our performance,” Pioli said, as quoted by Tuttomercatoweb.
But despite overseeing an embarrassing loss, the Milan boss refused to apologize to the fans. In fact, he strongly opposed the reporter’s question relating to that matter.
“I do not agree with this idea of apologizing to the fans. Do you think we lost 5-1 to Inter on purpose and lose the derby? We are disappointed, just as the fans are. You should only apologize when you do something wrong on purpose.”
Milan will have a chance to bounce back when they welcome Hellas Verona to San Sair next weekend.
